Acting as Principal Contractor we were engaged by our client Lidl to clear a large area of land in Hemel Hempstead. This land had been left for over 20 years and over that period has been left to grow overgrown. With the site surrounded by a large retail park, the scope was to clear the land vegetation to allow more accurate topographical surveys to take place ahead of the new store being built
With no amenities on site, we had a welfare van in-situ for the duration of the job acting as site office and welfare for the team.
Being a mixture of grass, bushes and other dense vegetation, we deployed the use of a 13-tonne excavator and flail, plus tractor and flail, to break up the dense vegetation, which was then piled and collected via grab lorry and taken away for composting at a local recycling facility.
As the land had been unoccupied for some time, areas with the densest vegetation were tackled initially with the use of hedge trimmers/strimmer’s, particularly where we knew from the site plan that a utility station housing was indicated.
Hiding amongst the vegetation was a large 350m2 mound of earth 2-3m high, which we levelled, so you could see the whole length of the site.
Further works carried out to strimming and cutting back at the fence line surrounding the site and generally making tidy. Throughout the process of clearance general waste accumulated over the years from being dumped was collected and taken away for disposal.
In total we had a team of 6 operatives along with site & project managers programmed in for a two week period. With the commitment of our team to this works we managed to clear the site to the satisfaction of the client in 7 days, even clearing a piece of land within the site as a gesture of good will that was not within our remit.
