AW Rail is fully committed to maintaining the London Trams Winter Gritting and De-Icing contract and ensuring the network remains operational, safe, and reliable during periods of ice, snow, and severe winter weather.

Over recent weeks, our teams have been working through late nights and early mornings in challenging conditions to keep tram stops open and safe for public use. With temperatures fluctuating sharply, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period, we have deployed trained operatives at short notice to respond to rapidly changing conditions. Their professionalism and willingness to step in when required underlines our ability to sustain this contract throughout the winter season.

Our extensive experience across transport and infrastructure networks has established AW Rail as a contractor that plans and delivers precisely when conditions become unpredictable.

All operatives and supervisors receive continuous training and hold the appropriate TSA and TWS competencies, ensuring they are fully prepared for working on the tram network. Safety is embedded throughout our processes, from route planning and risk assessment to vehicle operation and on-site delivery, allowing works to be carried out efficiently, responsibly, and without disruption.

London’s tram network is a critical transport link, connecting communities from Wimbledon through to New Addington, Beckenham, and Elmers End. Given the scale of the network, we regularly deploy multiple teams to ensure coverage is maintained and conditions are managed effectively wherever required.

Our Transport Manager ensures all vehicles are fully winter-prepared, correctly equipped, and stocked with the necessary tools, materials, and safety equipment to respond to both planned works and emergency callouts. Equipment is routinely maintained and calibrated to meet operational and environmental standards, with eco-conscious materials used where possible to achieve effective results with minimal environmental impact.

As we progress through the early stages of the London Trams Winter Gritting and De-Icing contract, we continue to work closely with our client to review performance, identify improvements, and refine delivery to ensure the network remains safe, resilient, and efficient throughout the contract term.
