AW CONSTRUCTION – FOLCA 2 UPDATE 2

AW CONSTRUCTION – FOLCA 2 UPDATE 2

FOLCA 2 Update 2 – 13 April 2026

Works at the former Debenhams store in Folkestone (Folca 2) have now entered week three, and progress across the site remains steady and on programme. With a range of skilled operatives across multiple trades, the team has quickly established momentum and is developing a solid understanding of the building’s structure and sequencing requirements for dismantling  and removal of all the key elements.

From roof level through to the basement, dismantling and strip-out operations are advancing in a controlled and methodical manner. Careful sequencing remains a priority to ensure safety, efficiency, and protection of retained elements. At ground floor level, materials are being segregated into designated waste streams, ready for transfer to approved recycling and disposal facilities. This disciplined approach is helping to minimise environmental impact while maintaining a clean and organised site.

A proportion of recovered materials has already been diverted for reuse, with items donated to local charities and community organisations. These materials will be put to good use locally, reinforcing AW Construction’s commitment to responsible resource management and meaningful community engagement.

Externally, scaffolding has now been erected to the rear elevation, enabling safe access for high-level works and the removal of windows and associated repairs to the facade. Additional scaffold installations are planned over the coming weeks as works expand across the remainder of the building.

As workforce numbers continue to grow and additional specialist contractors prepare to join the project, the site welfare facilities (constructed from reclaimed materials within Folca 2) have proven to be a real asset. The area has been well received by all personnel, with a strong team culture evident in the way operatives collectively maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation.

The project has also begun to draw attention from the public. Passers-by have shown a keen interest in the transformation of the building, often stopping to ask about its future use. At the same time, the team has taken a proactive approach in working alongside neighbouring businesses, ensuring that site activities do not disrupt their day-to-day operations. This has included practical support where needed, such as assisting with deliveries to nearby shops – small actions that go a long way in maintaining positive relationships within the local community.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone involved, both on and off site, for their continued efforts and collaboration in delivering this important project on behalf of Folkestone & Hythe District Council.
