AW Group Recycling Update — May 2026

The Humble Pallet. Anything But….

As spring takes hold and the warmer weather arrives, so too does the creativity of the communities we are proud to support. May has been a particularly positive month for our recycling programme, with a steady flow of surplus and waste materials recovered from our rail and construction projects finding new life across the region.

Despite our ongoing commitment to sustainable procurement, construction by its very nature generates surplus, materials delivered on pallets, recovered timber, and reclaimed goods that would otherwise go to waste. Rather than see these materials end up in a skip, we have built a network of schools, charities, allotments and community farms who are always ready and waiting.

The humble pallet, it turns out, is anything but humble. In the hands of these resourceful organisations, pallets become raised garden beds, compost bays, outdoor seating, storage solutions and so much more. At a time when financial budgets are under significant pressure, every piece of recovered material represents real, tangible value, reducing costs and enabling projects that simply would not be possible otherwise.

Even the smallest and most unassuming piece of recovered timber finds a purpose. It may not always be glamorous, but it is always useful and that is what matters.

With construction material costs continuing to rise, the value of what we recover from our projects only grows. For many of the community organisations we support, the contribution made by companies like AW Group is the difference between a project happening or not.

One of our favourite stories from recent years involves students at EKC Folkestone, who crafted a wonderful collection of bird boxes from recycled materials as part of their curriculum. We are absolutely delighted to report that this spring, those very same bird boxes are being put to excellent use with successful fledglings making their very first appearance.
