We have recently carried out some complex strip out projects for Champion across several sites where they had stores in outlet centres as part of Champion Stores re-organising their retail presence within the UK.
Normally these strip out projects are straight forward with our teams attending site and breaking down the retail unit to its bare skin ready for white boxing or for the new incoming tenant to create the desired space for its brand.
Champion wanted to negate the amount of waste from each outlet unit, by having us carefully remove several key components from the stores, items such as the existing racking, fixtures, fittings, TV displays and more, palletising them and having them sent to their main distribution site in Corby for deployment to new sites across the UK.
This meant that we had to carefully liaise with each outlet’s management team for access to site as on-site storage for these materials was at a premium, carefully allowing provision within the store for safe storage (whilst still carrying out numerous works) or using our fleet of vans as on-site storage until a suitable time slot for heavy haulage could be arranged to remove from site.
The main scope of works comprised of the following:
- Fully remove all racking back to the existing wall linings. Wall linings are to be made good and repaired as required to maintain ceiling integrity.
- Remove requested partition walls, ensure all walls once removed are clean and repaired as required ready for decoration in RAL 9010 Pure White emulsion.
- Full removal of all FOH and BOH loose fixtures and fittings, as well as all built in joinery found within the unit.
- Full removal of all the existing light fittings.
- Remove wallpaper / vinyl from all fitting room areas.
- All fitting room area walls to be made good and painted in Dulux RAL 9010 Pure White Eco Super Matt for interior use above skirtings.
- Furniture, Furnishings and Equipment, to be removed throughout the store, set aside and transported to the Champion storage warehouse in Corby.
- Remove the CCTV system, people counter, anti-theft barrier, cash desk supplies and the data rack.
- Remove the ICD video screens x 3.
- Remove the complete electrical installation back to the distribution board.
Our teams on the ground and back here at our Folkestone HQ worked tirelessly to provide logistical and admin support to the site managers, operatives and centre management staff across each outlet centre helping us build a great rapport with these teams and allowing us to show off the quality of our work and how we operate as a company.
It’s really encouraging for us to see a company like Champion wanting to repurpose as much as possible from an existing store and it goes a long way in strengthening our own “zero to landfill” ethos here at AW Construction.
Whilst it might add an extra layer of complexity to the project and especially with tight deadlines that our clients demand, putting highly valuable items such as these back into re-use really goes to show their commitment to both their own ESG goals and ours.
