PROJECT OVERVIEW

Eurotunnel Welfare Facility – This project was recently completed in time for the busy summer months of passenger travel and was to supply a welfare facility for the public in case of delays over the summer period, providing fresh water and sundries ensuring the health and safety of passengers.

Our works began with the clearance of some of the vegetation, including some very stubborn tree stumps,  for preparation of the excavation of the grounds for the pouring of a concrete pad and surrounding pathways. This was designed to an exacting specification to blend in with the existing buildings and also to take into account the position of the existing utilities to connect into ready for the installation of a partly fitted out container which contains the welfare facilities.

This project had its challenges, working within the passenger lanes on site with up to 400 cars per hours passing through meant we had to insure that careful segregation of the work site had to be maintained at all times, along with working around peak periods of travel (Easter Holidays, Half Term) where we stood down for a short period to maintain safety.

Our onsite team are all carefully vetted for works within this site which helps with the planning of works and ease of access to carry out the works package, maintaining good relationships with the client and other stakeholders whom we engage with.

Eurotunnel Welfare Facility – The main scope of works included:

  • Clear trees/bushes and excavate area for concrete pad
  • Rebar/reinforcement works
  • Concrete pad and path (approx. 8 cubic metres)
  • Supply waste/water and electrical services
  • Supply prefab container insulated ready for fitout (6m x 2.5m)
  • Clad container to client specifications (Acupanel composite exterior slat wall – dark oak)
  • 1st and 2nd fix interior of cabin
  • Supply cold room for food and water storage
  • Landscape surrounding area

Once the concrete pad had been poured to the exacting specifications laid out by the design team the partly fitted out container arrived onsite and was hoisted into place with millimetre precision. From here the main fit out works started adding in the connections for the cold room, utilities and the internal fit out of the serving areas. All this undertaken again within the live passenger lanes at the terminal.

A lot of careful preparation  by the project team had to be undertaken, making sure that all materials deliveries were made to our stores so that they could then be delivered to site on the day of fitment. Security is extremely important at this terminus and close liaison with the client, our onsite team and security personnel had to be undertaken in making sure everything arrived on time and was cleared for site access including our pre-approved subcontractors.

We successfully delivered the project to our client on time ready for the busy summer season and the increase in passenger numbers using Eurotunnel for the entry/exit to the UK.

Thanks to the project team headed up by Daniel Jones our suppliers and the subcontractors who collaborated so well to see Eurotunnels Welfare Facility project finished on time.

By investing in this welfare facility, Eurotunnel reinforces its role not only as a key logistical hub between the UK and continental Europe but also as a responsible organisation committed to high standards of care for its passengers.
