PROJECT OVERVIEW

In October 2022, on what is the Slough to Windsor & Eton Line, AW Rail began brickwork repairs to Windsor Viaduct for our client Sisk. Over 100 miles from our base of operations, we used a combination of AW Rail and locally sourced labour to facilitate the repair works.

The arches which make up this viaduct form part of a dynamic terrace of railway arches and forms part of one of the longest railway viaducts in the UK, this impressive brick work structure is raised over the flood plains on the run into Windsor. Our extensive knowledge of working within arches and on such structures such as viaducts ideally suited out skill sets.

The below repairs were undertaken over a distance of 150m along the viaduct (26 arches in total);

  • Soffit & Vertical Wall Recasement
  • Pin & Grouting
  • Parapet Wall Rebuild
  • Stitching
  • Weatherstruck Pointing
  • Devegetation
  • Kee Klamp Handrail

In what was a challenging project undertaking brickwork in the dark, Winter months and in the shadow of Windsor Castle and the watchful eye of Her Majesty the Queen, our team ensured the new brickwork was completed to as high a standard as can be expected from Royalty.

Following completion the Phase 1, AW Rail successfully secured phase 2 in late February 2023. This released another 8 arches for which we were given a tight programme – to have the additional 60m of viaduct complete prior to the Kings’ Coronation. Working around the clock with day and night teams, we were able to handover on time and with zero harm incidents reported.
