AW RAIL – RESTART A HEART
Today, October 16th is recognised as Restart a Heart Day which provides an opportunity for individuals and companies to learn and practice CPR techniques and other lifesaving skills.
Why should you do this?
Here at AW Rail one of our teams working on a London viaduct recently had to respond quickly when one of their colleagues began to exhibit signs of confused speech which within a few minutes resulted in them collapsing and going into seizure. Our team members were quick to respond and along with the Site Supervisor administered lifesaving CPR as his face had started to go blue.
Whilst those attending our colleague, another team member was phoning for an ambulance and due to their location assisted in guiding the ambulance to site, stopping and halting traffic so access could be made easier. Paramedics attended at which point our colleague had started to come round. Such was his condition he was rushed to St Thomas’ Hospital where he underwent further tests which identified that he had suffered a stroke, he was then transferred to Kings Hospital and placed in a stroke observation ward.
All of our operatives go through Health & Safety First Aid Training and along with the thorough safety and site briefings given were able to react quickly and calmly to this situation which ultimately saved a life.
Our colleague is now in a stable condition back at home but has a long road to recovery and we are supporting him and his family to make sure that he still feels part of the AW Family.
Ensuring staff understand site briefings and making sure they know things like routes to hospital, what to do in an emergency, and how to act in these types of situations is hugely rewarding for us as a company, knowing that our staff are looking out for one another further enforces “everyone home safe everyday”.
The whole team here at AW Rail would like to thank all those involved in this incident and the Site Supervisor for the calm and safe actions that they took.
