AW CONSTRUCTION – MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

AW CONSTRUCTION – MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 is a good opportunity to stop for a moment and think about how we are doing, how are friends or colleagues may feel, and how we might address these needs, rather than simply struggling on.

Working in the commercial construction sector often means early starts to travel to site, often battling against congestion, weather and more. Once on site, there is the focus to complete the project within the time scale for the client, which often in the retail world is a very tight deadline!

This can put a huge amount of pressure on everyone involved, not just those on site, but back at the office, supply chain partners, consultants and especially the client. But taking just a few minutes out of each day to focus on your mental health, how it affects how we think, feel, and act but also helps shape how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

As we all know, making the wrong choice in the construction world could leave to injury or in the worst cases, death.

This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week  is Movement – physical activity makes your body release endorphins, which improve your mood, reduce stress hormones, and promote better sleep.

It can be as simple as taking a brisk walk, chatting in the park with a friend, taking the plunge to join a group, or it may entail talking to a health professional. Everyone struggles at some point in their lives, and it is never too late to try to make changes or to seek help. Exercising also helps people keep fit and healthy which can have a positive impact on their wellbeing.

Moving more isn’t the only way to improve your mental health, you could also try:

  • Talking to someone you trust about how you are feeling
  • Getting out in nature
  • Doing breathing exercises
  • Mindfulness
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating well and getting enough fruit and vegetables in your diet

If you don’t feel able to talk to someone in work or outside of your workplace, then there are several organisations that you can reach out to in confidence to see if they can help you.

Here are a couple to get you started:
