Recycling timber – the journey of just one piece of sheet material…

Our recycling, upcycling, circular economy and sustainability projects continue to grow from those early days 3 years ago to today whereby we have successfully developed many long-term collaborative partnerships both locally and nationally across a diverse range of communites. What we may consider waste, others see as a valuable resource and it is through these collaborations that we have learnt so much.

As you can imagine we have a wide variety of waste streams that are generated through our daily activities. Timber is just one such waste stream therefore recyling timber plays a huge part in our efforts for reuse, recycling, upcycling and more.

Earlier in 2024 we had the pleasure in supplying some sheet material recovered from strip out projects here at AW Group and donated to EKC Folkestone campus for their carpentry students to make bird boxes for our teams to use across our rail and construction projects.

We held back some of the boxes from being sited on rail arches, bridges and shopping centres for use locally to our HQ here in Folkestone. We are always keen to engage with as wider range of communities as possible, no matter the age range, what they might do within the local area, how they support others etc.

Therefore, with great delight we were able to provide a nursery school just down the road from our office with a couple of bird boxes for their children to happily paint up ready for the nesting season in 2025.

We sincerely hope that these bird boxes do indeed attract nesting birds at their nursery, which does see a fair bit of passing traffic both pedestrian and motorised and that the children can experience first hand nature at its finest.

Recycling timber – here is just a taster of where it comes from:

• pallets
• beams and other structural elements
• windows and doorframes along with doors
• floorboards and other wooden coverings
• shuttering
• fencing, panels, stakes
• sheet material, such as chipboard & ply

Our projects within local communities are wide ranging and we’d love to hear from other people that we might be able to help, we have a very successful recycling project, it’s not just timber that we recycle,  that is ongoing which diverts a huge amount of waste from construction/rail projects away from landfill and into the betterment of local charities, schools, colleges and other communities.
