Across our many projects within the rail and construction we generate a large amount of timber waste from strip out activities, refurbishment, temporary works and so forth. Specialist works that are carried out within our rail sector (AW Rail)  often produce a good supply of the same material ready for reuse or recycling.

We’ve been lucky to partner with a wide range of organisations, supplying a phenomenal amount of timber that has been put to good use.

One such organisation is Wildwood Trust based near Canterbury who recently had Network Rail attend their site at Wealden Forest Park for their community volunteering day and they helped build some new Water Vole enclosures from the “2×2” that we use extensively throughout our brickwork repairs across arches, tunnels, viaducts and more here at AW Rail.

These enclosures will go on to support Wildwood Trusts upcoming Water Vole Project, where in spring 2025 they will be breeding 50 Water voles for release in July/August for an area of Surrey in partnership with Citizen Zoo as part of the London Water Vole Recovery Project. The aim is to create new populations of water voles in and around London to reverse their decline.

Wildwood Trust are hoping to support future reintroduction projects as part of the London Water Vole recovery project supported by the Mayor of London which includes partners such as ZSL, London Wildlife Trust and Peoples Trust for Endangered Species.

We are proud to play a small part in this project and look forward to future updates and the help and dedication of all concerned to protect one the UK’s fastest declining mammals. Well done to the Network Rail team for supporting Wildwood in their endeavours.
