AW GROUP – WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY 2025
World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 – Wednesday, 10th September
World Suicide Prevention Day takes place each year on 10th September. It serves as a vital reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the role we can all play in preventing suicide.
In the UK and Ireland, someone dies by suicide every 90 minutes, and one in four people have experienced suicidal thoughts. These are not just statistics – they represent colleagues, friends, family members, and members of our communities.
The Samaritans put it very powerfully:
“Suicide is not inevitable. You can interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. You could save a life.”
Sometimes the most meaningful action begins with something simple: a conversation. Even small, everyday interactions – a passing comment, a compliment, or a friendly question – can provide connection and relief in a difficult moment. These small gestures can interrupt negative thoughts and create space for more supportive conversations over time.
Suicidal thoughts can be interrupted!
The Samaritans surveyed people with lived experience of suicide, and the majority told them that their suicidal thoughts have been interrupted.
- 60% said their suicidal thoughts had been interrupted by someone close to them, like a friend or family member.
- 14% said their suicidal thoughts had been interrupted by a stranger or someone they didn’t know.
Earlier this year, the Samaritans ran their Small Talk Saves Lives campaign for the eighth year, highlighting how even brief exchanges can make a lasting impact. The campaign may be over, but its message continues:
“small talk matters, and it can save lives”
