AW GROUP – PILGRIMS HOSPICES BOOK SHOP
The Pilgrims Hospices team have recently completed the fitout of their new pre-owned bookstore in Whitstable, and it may well be the only dedicated second-hand bookshop in the town. Located at 11 Horsebridge Road, the space has been transformed with care, practicality, and a real focus on reuse.
Much of the interior has been created using surplus and reclaimed materials , including high-quality tracked lighting and timber that has been repurposed to form the shop’s display shelving. These shelves now hold an impressive and ever-growing range of fiction, non-fiction, and reference titles, giving the store both character and a sense of purpose rooted in sustainability.
Early signs suggest the community has welcomed the shop with enthusiasm. Whitstable residents appear to be keen readers, as the first week’s takings exceeded expectations. This strong start not only reflects the town’s appetite for books but also the value people place on supporting a respected local charity. Anyone visiting Whitstable would do well to stop by, explore the carefully arranged shelves, and pick up a book or two. Every purchase contributes directly to the ongoing work of Pilgrims Hospices and the support they offer in end-of-life care.
The shop itself offers a bright, clean, and inviting atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, enjoy a quiet browse, and stumble upon something you hadn’t planned to find. The day-to-day running of the store is handled by a dedicated manager supported by volunteers, whose commitment keeps the space welcoming and well-organised.
