AW GROUP – TIMBER RECYCLING FEBRUARY 2026
Timber Recycling – Across AW Group, we strip out buildings and structures in Kent and London every week. Floors, joists, pallets, framing – timber that did its first job well and still has decades of life left in it. The question isn’t whether it has value. The question is whether we choose to see it.
Here’s the hard truth: around 80% of wood discarded in the UK is recyclable. From the humble pallet to heavy structural sections. Yet millions of tonnes still end up being sent to recycling centres.
Wood stores carbon. As trees grow, they pull CO₂ from the air and lock it into their fibres. When we recycle timber, that carbon stays trapped. When we burn it or let it rot, it’s released. Every tonne of wood recycled prevents roughly 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere. Scale that up and you’re no longer talking about a token sustainability gesture. You’re talking about measurable climate impact.
But here’s the part that matters most: our reclaimed timber doesn’t sit in a yard gathering dust.
Right on our doorstep in Folkestone, local “Men’s Sheds” and community groups take timber from our projects and turn it into something useful again – furniture, planters, storage, practical items that are given back to the community. Schools, charities and colleges across our network constantly find purpose for what others might dismiss as scrap.
This is circular economy in its most grounded form. No buzzwords. No greenwashing. Just common sense.
And it works because people choose to make it work.
The emergence of Men’s Sheds (and other organisations) has amplified this. These groups don’t just build products; they build skills, connection and wellbeing. A length of reclaimed timber becomes a bench. A bench becomes a place for conversation. That’s social value layered on top of environmental value and community wellbeing.
So, here’s the challenge.
If you’re involved in strip-outs, refurbishments or site clearances, what are you doing to capture timber before it becomes waste? Are you segregating it properly? Are you building relationships with local reuse groups? Are you thinking one step ahead instead of going down the usual route of disposal?
Saving timber doesn’t require a grand strategy. It requires discipline. Planning. A willingness to see material as an asset, not a liability.
Across AW Group, we’re proving that what comes out of a building doesn’t have to be the end of the story. It can be the start of something useful, practical and community driven.
Timber has already done the hard work of growing, absorbing carbon and being processed. The least we can do is make sure it works twice.
The opportunity is sitting on our sites every single day. What are you doing?
