AW GROUP – RECYCLING UPDATE OCTOBER

AW GROUP – RECYCLING UPDATE OCTOBER

AW Group – Recycling Update October – It’s been another busy and rewarding month so far for everyone involved in AW Group’s recycling initiatives. Across our operations, we’ve continued to support a wide range of organisations — from community groups and educational centres to environmental projects — all united by one shared goal: making better use of the materials that already exist around us.

What’s been most encouraging is the growing enthusiasm we’ve seen from people who want to play an active part in recycling, reusing, and upcycling materials that would otherwise go to waste from construction and rail projects. The appetite for sustainable practice is clearly growing, and the creativity people bring to reusing these materials has been inspiring to see.

A great example of this was our recent giveaway of IBC tanks. We were overwhelmed by the number of responses and by the diversity of organisations eager to put them to use. From forest schools and community gardens to colleges and training centres, every single enquiry came from people looking to use these tanks for rainwater harvesting and storage. The common thread among all of them was a desire to reduce reliance on mains water and to make more responsible use of the planet’s resources. It’s proof that even the simplest redistribution of surplus materials can make a meaningful impact when placed in the right hands.

Other materials are also proving extremely popular. Used tarpaulins and tonne bags, which might once have been discarded, are now being segregated at our yard for easy collection and reuse. Many local projects have found creative second lives for these items, putting them to work in practical, resourceful ways. Even the odd bits of scrap are finding purpose — a few lengths of mesh fencing recently made their way to a local nature reserve, where they’re now being used to keep cattle off delicate boardwalk areas. It’s a small example, but it perfectly illustrates the spirit of our initiative: waste for one project becoming a valuable resource for another.

Timber, as always, remains one of the most sought-after materials. It’s used in countless applications — from community construction projects to creative builds — and we continue to recover and set aside as much of it as possible during our operations. Knowing how much value people place on reclaimed wood motivates our teams to handle it with care, ensuring it’s ready for safe and effective reuse.

Our recycling of both metal and plastic arch linings has been another area of success this month. The partnership with EKC Training in Hersden demonstrated the importance of providing these materials for educational and practical use. Beyond that, we’ve seen arch linings used to create roofing and cladding for outdoor structures — and even transformed into a “Santa’s Grotto” for a local heritage centre’s Christmas event.

Looking ahead, we’re now in discussions with other local businesses to explore potential collaborations, particularly around high-demand items like IBC tanks. By working together, we can make sure valuable materials are kept in circulation and used to their fullest potential. If you like more details on this, please make contact with Greg who will be happy to discuss this.

As our recycling initiative enters its third year, we want to thank everyone who has supported it and helped us divert these materials into worthwhile ventures. Every reused item reduces waste, strengthens community ties, and proves that practical sustainability starts with simple, shared action.
