PROJECT OVERVIEW

AW Rail –  the successful completion of our works at Blackheath Station, a complex and rewarding project delivered in a live operational environment. This scheme was significant not only for improving the station’s condition and appearance, but also for ensuring long-term resilience in line with Network Rail’s and Southeastern Railways vision.

As a Grade II Listed Station, Blackheath required a considered approach to balance heritage preservation with modern standards. AW Rail’s expertise in heritage-sensitive rail projects was key to navigating this challenge, ensuring that all interventions respected the station’s historic character while enhancing its functionality and resilience, for this we worked closely with our client who were delivering this package of works for Network Rail.

Our scope on Platforms 1 & 2 included the removal of existing dagger boards, glazing system, and pigeon netting, followed by full surface preparation and painting of all steelworks in accordance with NR/L2/CIV/039 and NR/L3/CIV/040 back to the original cream and green colour scheme. We also managed the CNC manufacture of new timber dagger boards, applying a T50 paint system in a controlled environment prior to installation, along with the installation of a new Lonsdale glazing system with Plasiax panels and replacement guttering. Through careful material selection and controlled fabrication, AW Rail ensured heritage compliance without compromising durability.

At the station building (trackside), works included the removal, re-insulation, and weatherproofing of the timber façade before reinstating and applying a T50 paint system. Further specialist repairs were carried out to the footbridge including timber windows and leadwork features. These works required AW Rail’s close coordination with conservation requirements, applying specialist skills to retain original features while providing long-term protection against weathering.

Access was a key challenge, with 80% of activities delivered mid-weeknights under line blockage protection, supported by three abnormal possessions. Careful planning, clear communication, and close collaboration with our supply chain ensured safe, efficient delivery in these restricted windows. Our ability to manage complex logistics in a live operational environment was critical to safeguarding both passengers and heritage assets throughout the programme.

The outcome is a high-quality, durable finish across Platforms 1 & 2, improved resilience of the building fabric, and enhanced passenger experience, all delivered with a strong focus on safety, workmanship, and client satisfaction proving that you can have an operational station with heritage traits that really benefits all that use the station.

For AW Rail, this project reinforces our reputation as a trusted partner for our clients working for Network Rail in delivering technically demanding, heritage-sensitive works that enhance the rail network’s long-term resilience.

The project was finished  in time for a commissioning ceremony celebrating the stations 176th year of operation with stakeholders attending from our clients along with the Railway Heritage Trust and the Blackheath Society, as part of the Railway 200 celebrations taking place across the UK during 2025. Not only have we received positive feedback from our client but also from those that live within proximity to the station.

A big thank you to our site teams, supply chain partners, and stakeholders for their dedication and professionalism throughout. Projects like this highlight the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and attention to detail. We look forward to applying the lessons learned at Blackheath Station to future schemes across the network.
