The 2025 Blackheath Tunnel blockade started in mid-May and continues through to the end of July. During this period the 1-mile-long tunnel has undergone several major repairs and detailed surveys to assess further works that may be required. The works have been undertaken by various stakeholders, all working within the cramped and narrow tunnels to make sure the programme of works completes on time and the tunnel can re-open to the public.
As part of this extensive works programme AW Rail were tasked by our client SRE (Southern Renewals Enterprise) to deliver a complex programme of structural and remedial works within the tunnel during this planned 10-week blockade. The scope of work involved a range of critical brickwork repairs, structural investigations, and collaborative problem-solving to meet both safety and programme requirements in this challenging tunnel environment.
Our scope of works delivered
Masonry Repairs & Repointing:
Extensive brickwork repairs were carried out across various sections of the tunnel, primarily focused on the haunches and crown. This included repointing, recasement, and the installation of temporary works in accordance with Network Rail (NWR) standards to support structural integrity during the works.
Temporary Works & Installation:
Due to the location and geometry of the repairs particularly in overhead sections we deployed temporary support systems. All systems followed NWR specifications and were supervised by certified Temporary Works Supervisors.
Challenging Site Conditions:
The tunnel’s persistent wet environment presented logistical challenges. AW Rail worked closely with our client, SRE, and their design team to identify and implement suitable materials and repair methodologies that maintained performance integrity under damp conditions, ensuring all repairs were delivered safely and to specification.
Cross-Pinning and Grouting:
Multiple areas throughout the tunnel required cross-pinning and resin grouting to stabilise existing masonry and enhance structural continuity. These works were executed with absolute precision, ensuring the correct pitch and depths of bars were closely monitored.
Tunnel Lining Investigations:
We conducted detailed lining thickness investigations using endoscopic surveys, recording data that was compiled and reported back to the client. This allowed informed decisions to be made on future asset management and intervention planning.
Core Hole Infill Works:
At the client’s request, we also undertook the infill of pre-existing core holes throughout the tunnel, accelerating the overall programme and enhancing the long-term integrity of the structure.
Project Outcomes:
This project provided AW Rail with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our technical expertise in tunnel maintenance and structural masonry repairs within operationally sensitive rail environments.
Our team’s ability to deliver high-quality results within the programme period and environmental constraints showcases our strength in collaborative delivery and adaptive problem-solving for the benefit of all stakeholders concerned.
During this project we provided all the competencies required as part of our inhouse delivery service, overseen by key personnel, Project Managers, Commercial & Resource Managers and operational support staff.
