Our works package at Blackheath railway station have continued over the course of 2024 with a comprehensive programme of works that have been carried out by our teams during this period. The Grade II listed structure was certainly in need of refurbishment and retains several of the original period features that dates to the mid nineteenth century when the station was built and put into operation.
The dagger boards on both platform canopies were in dire need of replacement and currently we have reinstated these on Platform 1 which reflects and shows off the station’s historical past, as with many historical buildings further works were uncovered after the removal of these.
The works that we have carried out so far have included:
- Strip-out of Existing Timber Daggerboards
- Strip-out of Existing Glazed Canopy Rooflights
- Preparation & painting of Canopy Steel Frame – on-going
- Installation of New Timber Daggerboards – on-going PL1 & PL2
- Installation of New Rainwater Goods – Upcoming
- Installation of New Canopy Rooflight System – Complete
With Blackheath station being on the North Kent mainline, a lot of the works have been carried out under carefully planned possessions, especially for the removal of the existing daggerboards. We have continued our works Monday through to Friday nights rubbing back the steel canopy frame, removing the existing glazed rooflights, installing new rooflight frames and polycarbonate glazed effect rooflights and working on the canopy supporting timbers and daggerboards on further line blocks.
With a completion date of late November, we are looking forward to seeing the refurbishment of this station and highlighting some of its original architectural merits.
It’s gratifying to know that the works we carry out are appreciated by all those that use the railway, having received comments from railway neighbours who have lived by Blackheath station for decades commenting on how pleased they are to see these improvements.
