Project Train Simulator Refurbishment
Client Eurotunnel
Completion Date July 2025
Project Manager Rob Wylie

PROJECT OVERVIEW

We have recently completed refurbishment of the Eurotunnel Train Simulator for our client. Not the sort of thing we get asked to do every day and we really were not expecting a full size, lifelike train carriage complete with vehicles to work on.

Training and safety play a huge part in our client’s services and these simulators are used for both initial and ongoing competence assessment. Training under normal operations, helping staff familiarise themselves with train controls, operating procedures and more. All this leading to emergency scenarios, simulating fire/smoke incidents, evacuations within the tunnel environment and other emergency scenarios.

Not only does training take part for their staff but outside agencies, particularly fire, rescue and police also can train for these scenarios. Giving everyone a safe and comfortable environment to learn and train in  we are ensuring that trainee operators, staff and other stakeholders experience the most accurate and immersive simulation possible.

Our scope of works covered several areas.

  • Painting and decorating of internal areas of the train carriages and training rooms.
  • Painting and decorating of external parts of the train carriages and training centre
  • New floorings within training rooms
  • Additional safety enhancements – fall barriers and uprated handrails, route identification marking .
  • External ground works to create new pathways between training centres
  • Cleaned seat coverings and installed new headrests to training carriage

Our team worked closely with our client ensuring works were carried out to specification and sourcing bespoke items locally for the train simulator – particularly the passenger carriage. Despite our best efforts to source original seat headrest cushions to fit in with the existing fabric design (We are sure some of our readers will remember that colour combination!) we could not find enough to match. We therefore had to instruct a local coachbuilder (SEC Works) to make up and install the new headrests in a neutral colour.

The finished works have certainly given the training facility a much-needed lift we hope that those who undertake their training enjoy the refurbished facilities. Working at this site also gives you the opportunity to view the chalk downs, along with the Folkestone White Horse from a different angle and enjoy watching those that use the thermals generated by the topography of the land around the Eurotunnel put to good use.

This Eurotunnel Train Simlulator is one of the many projects that we have completed on this site, we recently installed the Welfare Unit on the Passenger Lanes in time for the busy holiday season.
