AT A GLANCE

Project Purley Downs Access Point
Client Cleshar
Completion Date 11/2025
Project Manager Anthony Buckley

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As part of Network Rail’s CP7 programme to improve authorised access points across the Sussex Route, our team delivered a full renewal and safety upgrade for our client Cleshar of the Purley Downs Access Point (ELR: VTB2 – 12m 1364yds). The works focused on improving long-term durability, workforce safety and access efficiency.

Key elements delivered:

  1. Vegetation Clearance & Site Setup
  • Removed overgrown vegetation—trees, shrubs, ivy and grass—within 3m of the access route.
  1. Removal of Redundant Timber Stairway
  • Dismantled and removed the ageing timber steps under a fenced safe system of work.
  • Undertook CAT & Genny scanning to identify cable routes, including HV and signalling infrastructure, with an HV competent person overseeing works close to the HV route.
  • Transported all timber and redundant materials off-site for disposal with full waste traceability records maintained.
  1. Installation of New Kite System Access Stairs
  • Installed screw piles, accurately set out using a Total Station surveying tool overseen by an engineer for clarity, to form the foundation structure for the new steps.
  • Assembled and installed the new Kite System galvanised steel stair flight and landings, ensuring full compliance with manufacturer requirements and AFC drawings.
  • Completed inspection and test records with photographic evidence throughout installation.
  1. Walkway & Access Enhancements
  • Installed a new 1.5m palisade access gate to replace the existing chain-link gate.
  • Fitted new steel handrail to the right side of the walkway and existing steps to improve safety.
  • Installed GRP anti-slip grating along the existing footpath to improve underfoot conditions.
  • Added low bridge chevron plates either side of the arch to improve visibility and user awareness.
  • Completed all excavation works for posts using insulated tools under a permit-to-dig system.
  1. Trackside Protection Measures

Completed during an engineering possession:

  • Installed GRP Conductor Rail Guard Boarding (2m each side of the stair access point)
  • Applied anti-slip coating to existing concrete troughing routes, following manufacturer specifications to ensure durability and grip performance

The Purley Downs Access Point project was delivered on time and to the satisfaction of our client and other stakeholders. Using the Kite System screw piles enabled faster and safer  installation of the new foundations for the walkway on a difficult incline. Careful waste management also meant that we were able to repurpose the salvageable existing wooden stairs that went back into our recycling initiative here at AW Rail.
