Maintenance on railway stations comes in all shapes and sizes, and often it is the smaller, targeted projects that deliver the greatest day-to-day benefit for passengers. This project at Worcester Park Station is a clear example of how focused intervention can significantly improve both function and appearance without major disruption.
The existing small outbuilding on the platform had reached the end of its serviceable life. Years of exposure had taken their toll on the timber structure, resulting in a tired appearance and reduced weather protection. As the structure houses the ticket vending machine, it plays a critical role in the station’s operation. Protecting this asset, while also providing shelter for commuters using it, was a primary driver for the refurbishment.
The client’s brief was clear: improve the integrity, durability, and overall appearance of the structure while ensuring it remained fully functional, compliant with site requirements, and sympathetic to its surroundings. The solution focused on renewing the key structural and visual elements rather than full replacement, delivering a robust, long-lasting result.
The main scope of works included:
- New timber framework
- New facia capping
- New central capping timber
- Rear timber frame and ply sheeting with capping
- Internal cladding tongue and grove installed
- Installation of new roof sheets
- Lead flashing
- Installation of new guttering to rear of building
- Re applied signage
- Full decoration to newly installed woodwork front & rear
All works were carried out over a week of planned night shifts. This approach minimised disruption to station operations and reduced inconvenience to commuters during peak hours, while still allowing the team to work efficiently and safely.
Upon completion, the refurbished outbuilding was handed back to the client on schedule and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. The renewed canopy now offers a dry, bright, and well-presented space for passengers purchasing tickets, while also providing enhanced protection for the ticketing equipment itself. The project at Worcester Park Station demonstrates how well-executed maintenance can extend asset life, improve passenger experience, and deliver tangible value with minimal impact on daily operations.
