AW GROUP – NATIONAL NEST BOX WEEK 2025
Running from February 14th through to 21st February National Nest Box week aims to highlight the importance of providing nesting birds with a dry safe place in which to lay their eggs and hatch their offspring. Not just in this week but throughout the breeding season.
Birds of all species need our help!
Could you spare some room in your garden, balcony, office car park for a bird box?
Helping our common native species like Blue Tits, Great Tits, House Sparrows, Wrens, Robins and Starlings with a suitable bird box will not only help these species to thrive but also can attract rarer species as well.
Our timber recycling projects and initiatives have seen us supply bird boxes, made by students at EKC Folkestone, to schools, community gardens, commercial sites and more. Encouraging children of all ages (and their families) to introduce bird boxes to their own gardens, personnel spaces and working environments. It’s encouraging to note that bird boxes that have been in place over the past few months are now seeing nesting activity as we move in 2025.
Where we have had to reduce vegetation on structures affecting their structural integrity, we have placed bird boxes in its place, often making sure that the boxes we install are relevant to the species seen on site or that are prevalent in that area.
Making a simple bird feeding station can attract a wide variety of birds, along with natural nesting materials like hay, grass or potentially animal fur. Living with birds can be good for us too. Spending time in your garden, building your own box and watching birds make themselves at home are all good stress-busters.
If you would like to make your own birdbox there are a wide range of good sources on the internet, including the Nestbox Week website here: https://www.nestboxweek.com/
As part of our ongoing community initiatives, we are always looking to connect with local organisations, schools, colleges, community gardens and more to supply them with surplus and recycled materials from our rail and construction projects.
Do please get in touch with us and see how we can help.
Just a few photos of bird boxes and bird feeding stations we have had made by our local community are below.
