AW GROUP – RECYCLING UPDATE SEPTEMBER

AW GROUP – RECYCLING UPDATE SEPTEMBER

AW Group – Recycling & Social Value Update: September

The past few weeks have been a particularly productive period for AW Group as we continue to build momentum with our recycling and reuse programme. Even with the traditional slowdown that the summer holidays can bring, we have been able to engage with a wide variety of local organisations, charities, schools and community groups to ensure surplus/recovered materials from our rail and construction projects are being put to good use.

This initiative, which has now been running for almost three years, continues to exceed expectations in both its reach and impact. What started as a simple idea to prevent materials from going to waste has developed into a cornerstone of our Social Value programme, allowing us not only to minimise the environmental footprint of our projects but also to support communities in creative, practical and cost-saving ways.

Giving materials a second life

We are constantly amazed at the ingenuity shown by the groups we work with. Bricks that once formed part of a construction project are now being used as training tools for students in local colleges. Pallets, which might otherwise have been discarded, have been transformed into outdoor learning items at forest schools and community gardens. Even surplus/used electrical items are finding new homes in colleges, railway heritage sites and charity fundraising events.

In recent weeks alone, we have supplied:

  • Bricks to training colleges for hands-on learning.
  • Tonne bags to wildlife projects to aid conservation efforts.
  • Timber to schools, men’s sheds, community gardens and charities.
  • Pallets to forest schools, community gardens and colleges.
  • Arch linings, both metal and plastic to allotments, men’s sheds and colleges.
  • Scrap metal to heritage sites for restoration projects.
  • Surplus electrical items to a wide range of groups including colleges, railway heritage sites and SEND establishments.
  • Paint and decorating materials to support cultural events such as Folkestone Fringe and to enhance local schools and charity premises.
  • Repurposed site hoarding to local model railway charity
  • Surplus IBC Tanks to environmental centres for rainwater harvesting storage

Every item we divert from waste represents not only an environmental win but also an investment in people and places. These small but meaningful contributions add up to create a genuine ripple effect across the communities we serve.

Growing our Social Value programme

Our recycling work is also a key driver in the development of our wider Social Value programme. By building strong relationships with local groups, we can identify where needs exist and match those needs with resources that would otherwise go unused. This approach is helping us shape a structured, long-term Social Value strategy that focuses on sustainability, skills development, education and wellbeing.

We are working closely with our clients to explore what more can be done—both in terms of material reuse and in finding new opportunities for collaboration. Many of our partners are keen to understand how surplus materials or items from their projects might also be channelled into the community, and we are excited about expanding the reach of this programme together.

Looking ahead

As we move into the autumn, we will be sharing a series of case studies to highlight some of the most inspiring outcomes from the initiative so far. These stories will show the very real difference that can be made when organisations come together with a shared purpose: protecting the environment, reducing waste, and creating social value at the same time.

We remain open to new conversations and ideas. If you would like to know more about our recycling and Social Value initiatives—or if you think your organisation could benefit from surplus materials—please get in touch. We are always happy to share our progress, deliver talks, and explore how we can collaborate further.

It is through dialogue, collaboration and shared commitment that we can continue to build a more sustainable and socially valuable future.
